 GTHC Receives TexTreasures Grant

The Rosenberg Library is proud to announce that the Galveston & Texas History Center has received a TexTreasures grant to digitize the Galveston Tribune newspaper from 1924 to 1933. Digitization of issues from this time period will further advance knowledge of the island’s emergence as “the free state of Galveston”, a popular resort town and Prohibition-era gambling destination, attracting tourists and celebrities from around the United States. The Tribune contains detailed coverage of the construction of hotels, details of events, and beachside entertainment as well as about organized crime, gambling, and the underground economy from the Open Era.

The scans will be made available on The Portal to Texas History, joining previously scanned years. The grant is funded by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services through a grant to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant # LS-259205-OLS-25).
