Researching the Galveston Tribune on The Portal to Texas History Recording Now Available

A recording of our virtual tutorial on researching the Galveston Tribune on the Portal to Texas History is now available here. This tutorial was led by Dr. Ana Krahmer, Director of the Texas Digital Newspaper Program at University of North Texas, on April 9, 2026. Dr. Krahmer gives a detailed walkthrough of how to search issues of the Galveston Tribune, which are available here.

In 2025, the GTHC received a TexTreasures Grant to digitize the Galveston Tribune newspaper from 1924 to 1933. Tribune issues from this time period illustrate of the island’s emergence as “the free state of Galveston”, a popular resort town and Prohibition-era gambling destination, attracting tourists and celebrities from around the United States.

These issues are now available online through the Texas Digital Newspaper Program, which partners with communities, publishers, and institutions to promote standards-based digitization of Texas newspapers and to make them freely accessible. The Texas Digital Newspaper Program is the largest single-state, open access, continually growing repository of newspapers in the U.S.
