In addition to the public library services the Rosenberg Library also maintains the most comprehensive archives and museum in the nation on the history of Galveston and the early settlement of Texas. The Library accepted its first museum piece shortly after it opened in 1904. Since then, thousands of rare and interesting objects from around the world have been added to the collection. The Museum collections include approximately 6,000 artifacts and 1,500 artworks.

The RLM is beginning a multiyear project to enhance our collections storage. The main goal of this project is to create an accessible space where all artifacts will be individually rehoused in specialized boxes, folders, mounts and containers. This project will require inventory work, re-organization, and use of the PastPerfect database, heavy lifting, and working with potential HAZMAT in the collection.
The RLM seeks an intern to assist with the project above. Working under the supervisor of the Museum Curator, the intern will:
● Assist with handing, packing, rehousing and documenting objects in storage.
● Conduct collection wide inventories of artifacts
● Assist with re-organization of collections storage in multiple onsite location
● Assist with research, accessioning and cataloging of museum artifacts
● Aid in exhibition installation and research
● Curate and write a Treasure of the Month
Starting in June 2022, the intern should complete 120 internship hours over the course of 12 weeks, working an estimated 10 hours per week. Internship hours must be completed during Museum operating hours, M-F 8:30-5:30pm. Students will need to possess their own means of transportation to the Rosenberg Library.
● Must be enrolled in graduate or undergraduate studies with a focus in museums or history
● Basic computer skills (preferred experience working in a database such as Past Perfect.)
● Ability to work on a team
● Research skills
● Organizational, writing and communication skills
A stipend of $1,500 will be given at the end of the internship after completion of 120 hours.
